Weekly Update 26.02.07
Hi everyone!
Welcome to another week in school!
This week we have some visitors coming to talk to us. Yes, you've guessed! On Tuesday morning some fire fighters from Warrington Fire Service will be in school. (unless they are called out to an emergency). They will be explaining how methods of fire fighting have changed since the Great Fire of London. Your teachers are very excited about the visit and I'm sure all of you will be too. Remember to show your best behaviour on Tuesday and listen carefully to what the Firemen say to you, as they do a very important job.
Literacy.
This week we will be learning about 'Explanations'.
Explanations are very useful texts as they give us information about how or why something happens or works.
We will be learning about the key features that make up an explanational text, including labels and captions, flow diagrams, headings and sub headings and use of different types of text.
When we know all about these features, next week we will be using what we have learned to write an explanation linked to our current topics.
Some useful websites:

And one for fun:

By the end of the week:
ALL children MUST be able to recogise what an explanation text is and explain it's purpose.
MOST children SHOULD be able to recognise, explain the purpose and know the key features of an explanation text.
SOME children COULD know all the above, plus be able to produce simple flow charts that explain a process.
Numeracy.
This week we will be continuing to learn how to count in 2's, 5's and 10's and know the x2, x5 and x10 tables.
To encourage you to learn important number facts Mr Barker will be out giving special certificates when you achieve a particular target.
A BRONZE certificate will be awarded when you know your number bonds to 10.
A SILVER certificate will be awarded when you know your number bonds to 20.
A GOLD certificate will be awarded when you know your 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
These certificates will be awarded right across the school from Reception up to Year 6 for different targets.
So if you want a certificate.... keep on practising!!!

By the end of this week:
ALL children MUST be able to group objects into 5's and 10's; count on in 2's, 5's and 10'2.
MOST children SHOULD be able to record facts using the X and = signs.
SOME children COULD understand that multiplication can happen in any order
e.g if 2 x 5 = 10, then 5 x 2 must also equal 10; begin tounderstand that division is the inverse of multiplication.
Science.
This week we are beginning a new topic - 'Plants and Animals in the Local Environment.'
We will be going for a walk around the school playground and field to see what we can find!
First of all we will be concentrating on looking for animals, as it is still a little bit chilly for most plants!
