Weekly Update

Hi yes you have guessed it we have got another very busy week ahead of us.Thankyou for the home magazines that have been sent into school. PLEASE feel free to send more in because collectively across the three classes we haven't received very many.

In Literacy we will be continuing to read and base our work around the Traditional Tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella. Our teaching objectives remain the same therefore we will continue to read lots of different traditional tales and will be asking the children to re-tell the story back to us. We will discuss and compare different story themes, talk about the story settings and look at how ideas can be changed to make the story different from the original. We had some wonderful alternatives to Goldilocks and the Three Bears last week. This week the main focus for our writing is to use the correct punctuation for spoken words in the story, e.g speech marks.

By the end of this week:
ALL children MUST be able to identify the spoken text in the story.
MOST children SHOULD be able to write spoken text in a speech bubble.
SOME children COULD use the correct punctuation for dialogue in the story.

This week we will also be carrying out some written assessment with the children.

Some good websites to use are:
www.ngfl.northumberland.gov.uk/english/default.htm

www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/curriculum/literacy/lit_site/html/writing/earlywrite/sentencebuild.
(A good website for organising a sentence.)

www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/curriculum/literacy/lit_site/html/writing/earlywrite/jodie.html
(A good website for investigating ways of improving sentences using connectives.)

In numeracy the children will be looking at the topic of doubling and halving. Perhaps you could talk about the fact that doubling is the opposite of halving with your child. We will also be carrying out some assessment with the children.

By the end of this week:
ALL children MUST know by heart the doubles for numbers up to 10.
MOST children SHOULD know by heart the doubles for numbers up to at least 15 and their corresponding halves.
SOME children COULD know by heart the doubles for numbers up to 25 and above and their corresponding halves.

In science we are still investigating materials. We will be learning
that objects are made from materials, and different, everyday objects can be made from the same materials, that materials can be used in a variety of ways, to group materials together and make a record of groupings, that materials can be sorted in a variety of ways according to their properties and to use appropriate vocabulary to describe materials.

A website we have used in school is:-

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/sorting_using_mate.shtml

Our Here I AM topic is still books. You could perhaps talk about the different types of books that you have in your home and the Bible that is our special christian book that is used in church on a Sunday.

It is that time of year again when have a Book Week in school. This year we will be asking the children to dress up as a traditional story character e.g. Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf etc. To accompany their costume we thought it would be great if the children wrote a character profile. This would involve your child writing about the character's appearance (e.g. colour of eyes, hair colour, what they are wearing, distinguishing features e.g. yellow, pointy teeth etc). They would also have to write about their personality e.g. mean/kind, funny/unhappy etc. We will send a layout home that will be familiar to the children for them to use.
Thankyou to all of those parents who signed their child's diary to say that they read the blogspot.

Have a good week !
