Weekly update : 29.9.08

Hi everyone, we have truly started curriculum now and everyone has settled into the routines very quickly.

Thank you to everyone for their generous donations for the St. Joseph Welfare Centre on Friday. The Harvest mass will take place on Tuesday.

Literacy

This week in literacy we will be reviewing the stories read in class on the topic of familiar settings and will start to plan and sequence pictorially the stories used and start to develop their own versions.

We are starting to look at the VCOP in detail (We will be sending a copy of the VCOP home next week for you to look at)

V- Vocabulary, we will be changing the vocabulary in the text to make it more interesting and using more ambitious vocabulary. eg Mog sat on her mat. Mog sat on her cosy mat.

C- Connectives, we will be adding a connective to a sentence. Mog sat on her cosy mat because she was very tired.

O- Opener, we change the opening of the sentence. One sunny afternoon Mog sat on her cosy mat because she was very tired.

P- Punctuation, we add more appropriate punctuation. One sunny afternoon (in late June) Mog sat on her cosy mat because she was extremely exhausted!

By the end of the week the children:

Must be able to plan and sequence pictorially a story.

Should be able to use the opening - something happens events to sort it out - and then an ending structure to plan a story.

Could be able to use ( the above) and plan appropriate vocabulary to the story.

We will be testing the children on their high frequency words this week.

Numeracy

We are looking at adding by counting in 1's from the larger number, crossing a multiple of 10.

The children have learnt a song called adding can be done in any order please ask them to sing it at home because it should certainly help them with their adding skills.

By the end of the week the children:

Must be able to add by counting on in 1's from the larger number, crossing a multiple of ten.

Should be able to add by counting on in 1' from the larger number, crossing a multiple of ten. To add three numbers by putting the largest number first.

Could be able to add by counting on in 1's from the larger number, crossing a multiple of ten. To add three numbers by putting the larger number first. Start to add three large numbers together. e.g 24+12+25=

Topic

We are looking at what food we eat a lot of and what food we eat not very much of. We will be looking at how we need exercise to keep healthy so the children may be feeling their heart beat at home often to see how exercise makes them feel.

By the end of the week the children:

Must be able to state that they need to eat types of food from each food group to stay healthy.

Should know the above and state that regular exercise contributes to good health.

Could know the above and describe change that occur in them selves during exercise, e.g become hotter
