Weekly update 15.0.9.08

Hi everyone.

We hope you enjoyed the first full week in school last week and are ready to begin all the new topics.

We have finished assessing the children on their High Frequency Words and they should be stuck in the front of the reading diaries as soon as they are available.

Literacy.

We are beginning our Literacy this term with the lovely topic of 'Stories with Familiar Settings'. In this topic we are looking at a range of stories about events which the children may already have experiences of, and we look forward to hearing about them!!

By the end of week, the children:

MUST be able to sequence the main parts of a story.

SHOULD be able to do the above plus understand that characters have different points of view and could follow different courses of action.

COULD do the above plus suggest different courses of action for one of the minor characters in the story.

Can you make the penguins take a bow? Remember to ask your child to choose the right piece of punctuation for the end of the sentence.

Numeracy.

due to the fact that we spent more time than we expected completeing all our assessments, we did not cover all the Numeracy we had planned for last week. As a result we will be continuing with the same learning objectives this week.

By the end of the week the children:

MUST be able to count on and back in 1's or 10's from a 2 digit number. To write numbers up to 100.

SHOULD be able to begin to count up to a 100 objects by grouping in 5's and 10's. To estimate up to 50 objects.

COULD be able to count more than 100 objects and group in 5's and 10's and 20's.

kick the ball that shows 10 less than a given number

http://www.wmnet.org.uk/wmnet/custom/files_uploaded/uploaded_resources/850/counterv1.swf practice counting aloud in various steps. This will be useful all the way through the school.

Topic

We will begin our new topic on Health and Growth by learning that humans need food and water to stay alive. (Good excuse to treat ourselves I say!)

We will be reviewing what the children know about food and asking them what kinds of food they eat - and that we should eat a variety of foods. The information we find will then be recorded in a variety of ways, including charts, and then discussed.

If anyone has any information or resources we could use for this topic please could you send it into school.

By then end of the week:

ALL children MUST know that if we don't eat or drink we will die.

MOST children SHOULD allocate a food to a specific group.

SOME children COULD know all of the above and also explain their choices.

(apologies to anyone who doesn't support this team!)

We also begin a topic called 'Global Eye' in which the children will learn about the importance of their senses, in particular the importance of the sense of sight.

We will look at pictures and models of the eye and recognise that it is made up of different parts.

The main focus of this topic is for the children to learn about the work of an optician and how young people are fitted with glasses, including places in Africa where the provision is not as good.

If any parents are opticians or know any opticians who would be willing to come into school and talk to the children about this topic please let Mrs Malone or Ms Pinto-Edwards know.

Golden Time.

As from Friday 12th September we have changed the format of our weekly Golden Time.

From now on the 3 Key Stage 1 classes (Y1 and Y2) will rotate the following 3 activites each week:-

  • Movie Time
  • Board games
  • Creative activites

so each class is doing a different activity each week.

The children whose class's turn it is to have board games will be able to bring in a board game from home to play in class. (Please put names on if possible.)

If anything other than board games are brought in they will not be allowed to be played with.

Puctuality.

Well done to all those children who arrive promptly to school every morning and are lined up when the bell goes!!

Unfortunately a small number of children are late quite frequently and come into class after the registration period. This does have an unsettling effect on the class, and the child who is late, so we are asking if all children could be on the yard when the bell goes so they can come in with everyone else. Thank you.

Hope you have a great week!
