Weekly Update: 21.5.07

Hi everybody and welcome to our last week of this half term. What an exciting week we have all had with Beeston and beautiful art work completed by the Year 1 with Mrs Narraway.

Beeston was a wonderful experience shared by all! The children were well behaved and enjoyed all elements of the trip. We are sure they must have been very tired on the Friday night!

BEESTON DIARY

The children arrived at the centre and were able to make beds and eat lunch. The children then walked through some stunning fields to Beeston castle. The weather just about staying dry with a gusty wind. All the children managed to walk up the castle although staff did struggle at some points. (had too many jelly babies and crisps for lunch) What an amazing time was had by all! The children loved all of the little nooks and cranny's between the castle walls and enjoyed making up stories about Knights coming to the rescue as well as tumbling down the hills making themselves extremely dirty.
After children walked back to the centre we changed and played outside using the outdoor play equipment and facilities. What happened next was amazing the sun came out for the traditional Beeston Camp Fire, where we toasted marshmallows and enjoyed the company of each other.
Night was drawing closer and the children finally got to bed and most went to sleep straight away Zzz.
Making a candle at the candle factory was fun(in the wax, out the wax, drip, drip, drip, in the water, out the water wipe, wipe! those of you who have visited the factory will certainly recognise this phrase - if not ask the children, we are sure they will remember this!)
We are sorry that the children didn't get the opportunity to take their candle and model home but they will this week don't worry.
Thank you again for all of your support, we are so glad that this opportunity came up because we know how much enjoyment it gave the children. Thank you to all of the staff for making the experience a great one!
The Year 1's certainly have a wonderful experience at Beeston to look forward to.

This week the Year 2 children will be continuing with their SATS. In the morning the Year 1 children will be continuing the normal Literacy and Numeracy, whilst the Year 2's will be practising their writing skills.

LITERACY

This week is our final week working on non-chronological reports. The children were able to write about how to look after a rabbit last week from the great question time that Mrs Walker organised. (the children loved Mrs Walkers rabbit "Shadow" what a super star rabbit and thank you Mrs Walker) This week the children will be trying to write a non-chronological report about seasides today. This topic is linked with the Geography and History topic on the Seasides.

ALL children MUST be able to write a sentence about the seaside today with support.

MOST children SHOULD be able to sentences about the seaside following headings.

SOME children COULD be able to write sentences about the seaside using heading and making up their own headings.

The children will be continuing with synonyms this week, we will be continuing with guided reading targets this week.

NUMERACY

The children will be learning about different positions and directional language. For example forwards, backwards, up, down, left, right, above, below, beside.
The children will be programming a BEBOT in these directions/movements.
Some useful websites:

http://demo.iboard.co.uk/screens/thread_home.htm?thread_id=1#

ALL children MUST be able to describe position: above, below, beside, left, right.

MOST children SHOULD be able to describe position, direction and movement. Should know whole turns and half turns and be able to talk about things that turn.

SOME children COULD be able to do all of the above and use grids to direct a route accurately.

It would be very useful if you could talk to your child when walking to school about left and right positions and directions. Is the car parked on the left side of the road or the right when looking in a certain direction.

SCIENCE

Pushes and Pulls is our new Science topic. The children will be finding out that there are many sorts of movements which can be described in many ways.

What items can you push and pull at home? Have a look around your house ! See if you can find ten things that you push and ten things that you pull.

TOPIC

We are starting the history topic called "What were seasides like in the past."
This week that children will be looking at which parts of the year key holidays take part, recall information from their past to answer questions about holidays and to place key holidays in chronological order.
