Weekly update 30.04.07

Hi there!

Welcome to another exciting week in Year 1/2. There isn't much news this week but we would like to say welcome to Miss Barker, a final teaching practice student. She will be spending six weeks teaching Ms Pinto-Edwards class. I am sure that she will have a great teaching experience.

Literacy
In Literacy this week we will be spending one final week looking at stories written by the author Martin Waddell. The stories we will be focusing on this week are: 'Can't you sleep little bear?' and 'Owl Babies'. This week some children will be writing a story based on his work.

About MartinWaddell:

By the end of the week:
ALL children MUST be able to use a setting based on a story from Martin Waddell
MOST children SHOULD be able to use charactierisation in a story based one from Martin Waddell.
SOME children COULD be able to use dialogue in a story based on Martin Waddell.

Numeracy

In numeracy we will again be covering addition but adding by bridging through 10 e.g. crossing the tens, 9+5 or 38+9. We will also be looking at subtraction but using the language of 'difference' e.g. find the difference between 10 and 6.

By the end of the week:
ALL children MUST be able to add bridging through 10.
MOST children SHOULD be able to bridge through 10 across 2-digit numbers with addition.
SOME children COULD be able to add and subtract by bridging through 10 across 2-digit numbers.

Science

In science we will be continuing to look at the topic of Light and Dark. The children will learn that light is essential for seeing things and which senses can be used to help us identify things in the dark They will also be comparing light sources. Can you explain what a light source is? How do we find our way about in the dark? A good game to play at home would be 'Blind man's bluff'.

Topic

In geography we will be looking at the physical and natural aspects of the seaside e.g. the beach. The children will be sharing their own experiences of visits to the beach and talking about what they might find there. E.g. sand, shells, creatures, rock pools. It would be fantastic if you have any artefacts (collected on the beach) or photographs if you could bring them in.
