Weekly Update 22.9.08
Hi everyone, what a busy week!
This has been the first week of full curriculum and the children have got back into the swing of learning very quickly! Well Done!
We have completed assessing the children on their high frequency words and they have been stuck at the front of each diary. Please start to have a look at them now.
Literacy
We have been looking at the familiar story of Mog and the Vee Eee Tee. The children have been talking about the experiences they have had in vets and other familiar settings - what interesting stories they have to tell.
By the end of this week the children:
Must be able to describe what a character does in a story and name one of the characters from the class book.
Should be able to do the above plus understand the story structure, being able to identify the use of temperal connectives.
Could be able to do the above plus be able to identity the use of temperal connectives in other familiar texts read.

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/learn_y4/main.asp?lesson_path=year_4/writing_stories/&lesson_file=lesson.swf&language=eng this will be useful for yourselves as well as some great sequencing activities for beginnings, middles and ends of stories.
http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/cap_letters_stops/eng/Introduction/default.htm how to use capital letters and full stops. This has some lovely activities to help click and drag them to the correct place.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/starship/english/penguinsonice.shtml Can you make the penguins take a bow? Remember to ask your child to choose the right piece of punctuation for the end of the sentence.
Numeracy
This week, we will be focusing on Place Value. The children will be able to answer questions such as ‘How many tens are there in 42?’ ‘How many hundreds are there in 569?’The key question for this week will be ‘How can we PARTITION this number?’Partition is a key piece of vocabulary, which the children will encounter over and over again. It means splitting a number up into how many hundreds, tend and units it is made from.
By the end of this week the children:
Must be able to partition numbers into tens and units.
Should be able to partition numbers into tens and units, order numbers to 100 and position them on a hundred square.
Could be able to partition into hundreds, tens and units and be able to know the positions on a two hundred square.
http://enlvm.usu.edu/ma/nav/activity.jsp?sid=nlvm&cid=1_1&lid=154 this does take a little while to download, but is well worth it. The children need to solve the problem using the Base 10 apparatus that we use in school. The instructions on the right hand side are really easy to follow.
http://www.innovationslearning.co.uk/subjects/maths/activities/year3/dienes_addition/question.asp again this uses the same equipment, but the numbers involved are a little more challenging, as they include hundreds.
http://www.ictgames.com/woodseasy.html click once to partition the number and then choose the correct number to double it. Remember the rhyme...Double the tens and double the units.
http://www.ictgames.com/woodcards.html again, the same activity, but a bit more challenging as the numbers involve bridging through 10 and 100.
http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/games/numbersense/index.html this game does take a while to get the hang of, but once you figure out you have to generate a larger number than the machine, you’ll fly ahead.
http://www.ictgames.com/sharknumbers.html be careful you don’t get eaten by the shark! Look at the green number blocks on the surf board and then choose the correct number in the bubbles. Get one wrong, and the shark takes a bite of the board!http://home.freeuk.com/elloughton13/math81.htm we will be using this in class to show the children how numbers are made up of hundreds, tens and units.
Topic
We have started our topic about Health and Growth. We will be looking at our diet, what types of food we eat for breakfast, lunch and teatime as well as the type of snacks we eat.
The children have brainstormed some fantastic questions about what they what to know by the end of the topic. Some examples are:
Why do people take medicines?
Why do we have hair under our armpits?
How many bones do we have in our body?
How do our ears work?
Why do we have different sized feet?
Here is just a sample of the questions asked. We will be sending a list of these question home for the children to investigate for homework - get those science books out!
By the end of the week the children:
Must be able to able to describe foods that they frequently eat.
Should be able to with help present results of a food survey as a block graph and say what it shows.
Could be able to present results of a food survey as a block graph and say what it shows.

We have started the number bonds challenge so the children will be eager to improve their mental maths by being able to add numbers to 20 quickly. The children have 100 number bonds sums to do in five minutes.
If the children achieve 80% they receive a bronze award, 90% a silver award and 100% and gold award.
For homework we sent the number bond rhyme home, we have asked the children to keep this at home and learn the rhyme as it will certainly help them with their number bonds challenge. The children know some actions to go with the rhyme, please feel free to sing along with them !!!
REMINDER:GOLDEN TIME
From now on the 3 Key Stage 1 classes (Y1 and Y2) will rotate the following 3 activities each week:-
Movie Time
Board games
Creative activities
So each class is doing a different activity each week.
The children whose class's turn it is to have board games will be able to bring in a board game from home to play in class. (Please put names on if possible.)
If anything other than board games are brought in they will not be allowed to be played with.
OPTICIANS AND VETS
The children still need equipment for their role play area to do with these two topics.
e.g old glasses, leaflets,
Punctuality
Thank you to everyone who has been on time and ready in the line in the morning. You might have noticed that it has been very busy recently. All of the children in foundation stage are now in school so there are a lot of children coming and going in between corridors. We would be very grateful if the children are in line on time ready to come in so that it helps all children to settle quicker.
REMINDER
NON UNIFORM DAY
There is a non uniform day on Friday and the children have been asked to bring in a donation for St. Joseph's Welfare Centre.
Thank you for your continued support.
