Weekly update 20.10.08
Hi everyone!
Welcome to the last week of this half-term. Hasn't time gone quickly since we came back in September? Before we know it it will be the end of term and Christmas will be here!
We had a very enjoyable Spanish week last week and all the children enjoyed sampling some paella and Spanish omlette in our Cafe. Many thanks to Mrs Fox and Mrs Worrall for showing us their culinary skills.
Last Monday was also the second Open Day for our school. We had lots of visitors in school and received some very positive comments in the visitors book. Thank you to everyone who supported us on the day.
This week is Assessment and Review week, therefore we will be completing many of our current topics and assessing what the children have learned.
Literacy
This week we will begin the topic of Poetry which we will carry on after half-term. The unit is called Patterns on the Page and involves investigating a variety of poems and identifying patterns in the language and structure.
A big emphasis of the unit is to identify and investigate interesting and inventive language choices. Please do encourage the children to look for interesting vocabulary when they are reading at home.

By the end of the week:
ALL children MUST be able to sort poems according to their pattern type and then perform some of them in appropriate fashion.
MOST children SHOULD be able to recognise different patterns within the language and structure of poems.
SOME children COULD understand how to play with interesting and inventive language choices to create or continue particular patterns.
Numeracy
This week we continue with the theme of measurement but in relation to the units of Time. We will be concentrating on larger units of time for this part of the topic, i.e Seasons, months, weeks, days and hours and how they are related to each other.
Some of the children are still unsure about the date of their birthday and who is older or younger than them within the class, (a big cause of arguments!!) so this is a good opportunity to clarify such an important subject!!
By the end of the week:
ALL children MUST: be able to know how many days are in a week and how many hours are in a day.
MOST children SHOULD: be able to know the above and the months of the year and seasons in a year.
SOME children COULD: be able to know the above and know which month is in each season ,and order them.

Topic
We will be continuing our current topics of Health and Growth and Global Eye this week.
In Health and Growth we are looking at the role of Medicines and how they are used correctly to make people better.
In Global Eye we are learning about Africa and the difficulties people there would face if they needed glasses.
A reminder:-
If you have any unwanted glasses at home please send them in to school for our SPECS APPEAL.
We are aiming to collect 200 pairs of specs for Africa and have still got a long way to go!
Here I Am
The children have just started a new topic of Invitations. Please could you send any examples of invitations in to school so that we can have a look at the range of situations they are used for.
Parent's Evening
By now you should have received an appointment to meet your child's teacher over the coming week. If you have not, and would like to see them, please inform the teacher as soon as possible.
Times for parents of children in Year 1 or Year 2:-
Monday:- 3:30pm to 5:00pm
Tuesday:- 1:30pm to 5:00pm
Thursday:- 3:30pm to 5:00pm
As it is still quite early in the school year the children's books will NOT be available for viewing on this occasion.
We look forward to meeting you, discussing how your child has settled into their new class and how they are making progress with their learning.
Thank you for your continued support.
