Weekly update 30th March 2009

Literacy

The children will be continuing with the poetry theme of -Really Looking. This poetry looks at the descriptive pose of a poem. We will be looking at whether the children can respond to poetry through dance and drama.

Texts used during this week:

Night and Stars by Stanley Cook

The night will never stay by Eleanor Farjean

Escape at bedtime by Robert Lewis Stevenson

Counting the Stars byIan McMillian

Moonlight, Summer Moonlight by Emily Bronte

Twinkle , Twinkle Little Star - Anon

Star Light Star Bright - Anon

We have tried this week to encourage the children to describe a setting for poetry as well as looking at the words in the poems to look deeper into the illustration. We have used a memory techniques help them describe a setting. Although we often relate this to story telling we can use this to develop the ambitious and imaginative vocabulary.

We are progressing the children from using a memory technique of story setting transferring their skills to a setting of a picture poem.

First, the children will learn a rhyme, where they associate pictures/objects with the numbers 1 to 9. Ask your child if they can remember the actions to go with this. Then we add an element of a story setting to each number.

1 – SUN – a location

2 – SHOE – something close by

3 – TREE – something in the distance

4 – DOOR – a sound you can hear

5 – HIVE - something you can touch

6 – STICKS – a smell

7 – HEAVEN – something moving or moving somewhere

8– GATE – emotions or feelings

9 – WINE – a different viewpoint

The children then take all of these elements and use them to help them remember the order of the sentences to write the opening of their poem.

All children must be able to read a poem using their phonic strategies and help to decipher meaning. Look at the language and description in a poem. Be able to recite simple familiar rhymes/songs. Perform rhymes and songs using movement and dance to aid performance.

Most children should be able to read a poem and help to decipher meaning. Look at the use of the language description in a poem. Be able to recite familiar/songs.Perform rhymes and songs using instruments, movement and dance to aid the performance

Some children could read a poem using expression focusing on key words to enhance meaning.

Look at the use of language description and suggest alternative words. Be able to perform rhymes/songs using instruments, voices, movement and dance to enhance performance. Scribe rhymes/songs using correct punctuation.

Numeracy

The children will be continuing with their times table and focusing on repeated addition/array. The children will be recording multiplication facts using x and = in number sentences.

All children must be able to record simple multiplication facts using x and = in numbers sentences.

Most children should be able to record multiplication facts using x and = in number sentences and extend those number sentences to lots of 3's and 4's. To begin to understand division as grouping.

Some children could be able to record multiplication facts using missing numbers in the number sentences. To know that division is the inverse of multiplication and to know that division sometimes leaves a reminder.
